Look closely at these lines.

You will not find suffering here,

or the pain someone is feeling

as their light burns from a window,

and their hospital corridor sleeps

in the blue silence past midnight.

There are no traces, only reminders,

of the mother who grieves a child

after the bodies are pulled free

from the dusty bombed ruins,

and the child’s face is a ghost.

Here are only rumours of happiness

hanging around the end of lines,

looking for something tangible

to which they might attach themselves,

the way the perfume of a lover

hovers over the scattered sheets

that have cooled and left the shape

of something that was once so real,

an island whose profile appears

as a sleeping body on the horizon

that wants to be named and touched

and holds out its arms to embrace you

as you walk through the spirit

of someone who once loved you,

a penny that had its luck run out

though you continue to value its worth.
